Gridded bathymetric compilation of Ryder Bay from raw and processed multibeam echosounder data collected by the RRS James Clark Ross (2001 - 2016)

We present a bathymetric compilation of Ryder Bay here defined by the following bounding box: 68.48 to 68W, 67.7 to 67.46S. This bathymetry grid was compiled from a variety of multibeam swath bathymetry data acquired during 18 different cruises (see lineage) undertaken by the RRS James Clark Ross. The data is available as a grid of 0.0005 degrees resolution in two different formats: a GMT-compatible (2-D) NetCDF and Arc/Info and ArcView ASCII grid format using geographic coordinates on the WGS84 datum.

Statement

Methodology:

The bathymetry map was compiled from a variety of different data sources. The primary data are multibeam swath bathymetry collected from scientific cruises undertaken by British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

The complete list of cruises used for the compilation is described below:

RRS James Clark Ross expeditions: JR59, JR69-67, JR71, JR84, JR112, JR157-166, JR158, JR165, JR179, JR185, JR194-197, JR230, JR254D, JR298, JR306-307, JR312, JR15003, JR16003

The grid was created using the mbgrid program from MB-system version 5.5.2336 , using the parameters " -E0.0005/0.0005/degrees! -G4 -A2 -F1 -C2 -R-68.48/-68/-67.7/-67.46" for Arc/Info and ArcView ASCII grid and -E0.0005/0.0005/degrees! -G3 -A2 -F1 -C2 -R-68.48/-68/-67.7/-67.46" for the netCDF file. This uses a Gaussian weighted mean filter, a spline interpolation to fill grid cells not filled by swath data (mode 2 is chosen, the interpolation fills all undefined cells within a distance of clip cells from data) and the bathymetry is gridded as topography (positive upwards) given in meters.

Data collection:

Bathymetric data was collected using a hull-mounted EM120 or EM122 Multibeam Echo Sounder (MBES). The EM122 equipment was operated using Kongsberg Seafloor Information System (SIS) and Helmsman software.

Data quality:

The grid contains both raw and processed data.
