Major and trace element data for plagioclase and whole-rock samples from Japan, sampled from the GEOROC online database (NERC Grant NE/P017452/1)
Major and trace element data for plagioclase and whole-rocks from Japan sampled and filtered from the GEOROC online database (http://georoc.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/georoc, state: 1 January 2017). The data was used to test the recently developed plagioclase porphyry indictor mineral, as described in Williamson et al. (2016, Nature Geoscience, 9: 237-241), on samples from Japan. Japan is considered a negative control as it has no known porphyry deposits, despite showing favourable geology. The data was used in Williamson B.J., Hodgkinson M., Imai A., Takahashi R., Armstrong R.N., Herrington, R.J., 2018. Testing the Plagioclase Discriminator on the GEOROC Database to Identify Porphyry-Fertile Magmatic Systems in Japan, Resource Geology, 68: 138-143.

- Statement
- Data for “convergent margin” settings only were used. For quality control, data were filtered for oxide wt % totals of between 98.5 and 101.5 and then for data points with K2O < 1.2 and FeO < 1.2 wt %, to exclude K-feldspar and reduce the likelihood of including data affected by alteration (phyllic or propylitic). Any data from samples labelled as altered in any way were omitted. The data were then filtered for total cations (a.p.f.u.) of between 4.98 and 5.02 to exclude poor-quality data. Records for plagioclase from inappropriate rock types were removed. Excess Al (Al*) was calculated such that Al* = (Al/(Ca +Na + K)) − (0.01*An). For whole-rock geochemical data, the GEOROC database was first filtered for data from Japan and “convergent margin” settings. The data were then filtered, as much as possible, according to the criteria by Loucks (2014, Aust. J. Earth Sci., 61, 5–16.).
