Ostracod assemblage data from Wallywash Great Pond, Jamaica (NERC Grant NE/K00610X/1)

Ostracod species assemblages from Core WAGP taken from Wallywash Great Pond, Jamaica. Values are numbers of valves per gram of dry sediment and are presented by depth in core. A chronology for the core is also provided by radiocarbon dates and short-lived radio-isotopes. The data provide a proxy for changing hydroclimate, lake-level and carbon cycling in the lake and its catchment for the period 2000 – 200 CE

Statement
Samples of 1 cm stratigraphic thickness were taken from selected levels in core WAGP, dispersed in tap water and sieved through a 250 µm mesh. The > 250 µm residues were oven dried at 40 ?C and ostracod shells picked from the dried, coarse fractions under a low-power binocular microscope. Although similar amounts of sediment were processed for each level, exact weights were not recorded. Separate samples were therefore subsequently weighed, processed in the same way as the original sample and the ostracod content counted to estimate ostracod concentrations in valves per gram of dry sediment. These data were then used to estimate the concentration of each species, in valves per gram of dry sediment, which are the values presented here.
