- Statement
- Insect specimens were collected between June 2020 and August 2021 from various locations in England using a hand net. Specimens were euthanized and 3D digital images of the insect specimens were obtained via photogrammetry. A 3D shape file (“mesh”) was built from a set of 36 photographs using the software 3DSOM. This produced the "raw reconstructions" which are provided in the form of .obj files with associated .jpg textures. Using the images obtained from photogrammetry as starting points, we constructed digital “transects” of similarity between pairs of real insects through 3D morphological space. We defined axes of phenotypic variation along which the traits of shape, colour, pattern, and size varied smoothly from one image to the other, and generated novel phenotypes by picking either intermediate or extrapolated points along those axes. The resulting 3D meshes are the "modified intermediate images" which are provided as .ply files.
